The Internet Corporation for Assigned Names and Numbers (ICANN) made a decision on November 20 to register the new .հայ (.hay) domain name. The registration will be followed by a technical coordination process that will last for 3-6 months, the Ministry of Transport and Communication reports.
The registration allows users to disseminate information on the web using the .հայ domain in the Armenian alphabet.
The Armenian-language domain will promote the use of the Armenian keyboard abroad, the implementation of Armenian fonts in modern mobile devices and will allow to develop the level of knowledge of Armenian on the Internet.
The current .am domain was assigned to the Republic of Armenia in 1994, the Internet Society NGO got the right to register it in the same year. The same NGO will retain the right to register the .հայ domain.
