Bursa is to host the 2010 FIFA World Cup qualifying second-leg match between Turkey and Armenia tonight, a match which is likely to be a turning point for bilateral relations between the two countries but one holding little prospect of excitement in terms of soccer as both teams have already lost their chances to qualify for the World Cup tournament.
The match, which will start at 9 p.m. (11 p.m. Yerevan time), will be attended by Armenian and Turkish Presidents Serzh Sargsyan and Abdullah Gul

Armenia Football Federation President Ruben Hayrapetyan told the Hürriyet Daily News & Economic Review that too much is expected from the sport as the national teams of Armenia and Turkey prepare for the return game, to be played next Wednesday.
“World public opinion made the [first] match too big of a deal and did not stop there, calling it ‘football diplomacy.’ I do not like this term at all,” said Hayrapetyan. “I want neither my federation nor my players to be political figures. Politics do not interest us at all”

All precautions have been taken to prevent any incidents during the upcoming national football game between Turkey and Armenia, the governor of the host city said.
“A warm welcome here will earn prestige not only for Bursa but also for the country and boost Turkey’s image,” Şahabettin Harput, the governor of the northwestern city of Bursa said.

The necessary security measures have been taken to prevent incidents that could possibly erupt during the match. Unfurling anything other than national flags or banners won't be allowed in the stadium

Prior to this game in Yerevan, Armenia had only taken one point from seven previous matches in the pool and still remain a point behind Estonia in the fight to avoid the wooden spoon

FIDE Grand Prix 5th tournament ended with Ivanchuk’s victory |

On August 23 the last round of the Grand Prix tournament, being held in Jermuk, took place. In the final 13th round Ukrainian Vassily Ivanchuk beat Armenian Vladimir Hakopian and has been crowned the champion of the tournament.
In previous “Grand Prix” tournaments Ivanchuk has never performed a successful participation but this time in Jermuk he has had perfect participation winning the tournament.
After the final round Armenian GM Levon Aronian and Boris Gelfand have 8 points and share 2-3 horizontals.

Over 250 athletes from 40 countries will participate in the European Youth Judo Championship which will take place September 11-14 in Yerevan.Vice Sports and Youth Affairs Minister Samvel Khachatryan and Chairman of the Armenian Judo Federation Alexan Avetisyan told today journalists that previously 35-36 countries took part in this tournament. For the first time athletes from Albania and Monaco - 2 judoists from each country, will take part in this championship, Ireland's sportsmen comprise greater number than usual.
